Happy Holidays from the staff at Mine Mill 598/CAW!
Published: December 17th, 2012

Message from Anne Marie MacInnis
Vice President / Community Based Organizer

The CAW’s organizational structure has undergone another massive change.  The National Automobile Aerospace, Transportation and General Workers Union of Canada (CAW – Canada) and Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union have come together and we are now 325,000 members strong.

The following 2 paragraphs are part of our Constitution and can be found under our statement of principles.

Working People Needs Unions
We formed our Union because we could not depend on employers to provide us with dignity, a measure of security and a rising standard of living.  And, over the years, we did make impressive gains.  But, our objectives remain far from fulfilled, and with even our past gains under attack, we need unions today as much as we ever did.

Organizing is a new priority for the Union.  It is an act of solidarity, a way to give back and build strength in the Union and within the working class.  Organizing is a critical first step in mobilizing workers.  Through organizing, individual workers go beyond the limits of individualism and assert their right to change the terms and conditions of their employment.  In collective action, they join a movement of social and economic justice.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone and their families.

Message from Carol Baxter
Financial Secretary

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a great holiday with family and friends.  I would also like to extend my best wishes to all of our members, both active and retired, as well as your families, that 2013 be a healthy and wonderful year.

I would like to remind you all that this Union is only as strong as its members.  We can only help if we know what your issues are.

Thanks so much for the support I have received over the years while fulfilling my duties for this Union.  I appreciate the help, mentorship and friendships that I have experienced with the people of this Union.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Brinks Canada Ltd. – Gates St. Louis, Unit Chair

Looking back on 2012, I would like to congratulate Everyone for working together and getting the job done.  Even with the many challenges along the way, we managed to pull through.

Wish you all a very Merry Christmas and all the best in the New Year.

Nutra 2000 – Huguette Gagne, Unit Chair

The holidays are coming and this is the time of year that
family gets together.  For some, it’s the only time of year
that an effort is made to be all together.

This time of year is important to me because I get to see
my children and we can all relax and enjoy ourselves.

Nutra 2000 wishes you all peace; may you all find joy in both the gifts you receive and the ones you give.  Have a wonderful Christmas and a very Happy New Year.

University of Sudbury – Rachel Kenwell, Unit Chair

Wishing all our members a safe and prosperous year.

May this holiday season bring us opportunity to focus on the truly important things in our lives like our family, friendships and health.

Remember to take the time to enjoy the fruit of your labours and do the things that bring you joy and fulfillment.

Guy Desloges
Unit Chair - Xstrata Nickel

I would like to personally wish all of the members of Mine Mill Local 598/CAW a happy and safe holiday season.

I am optimistic that our bargaining committee will do all that they can to work with the company to reach a collective agreement by February 1st, 2013.

Please remember to allow yourself the time over the holidays to enjoy your family and friends...they are our biggest assets.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

Guy Sonier
Joint Health & Safety Co-Chair – Strathcona Mill - Xstrata Nickel

Seasons Greetings Everyone!!!!

I hope everyone is ready or almost ready for the best holiday of them all.  A house full of family and friends and a belly full of your favourite food to boot.  We are lucky!!!!   But...I always feel a bit of guilt knowing that there are a lot of people out there that it will not be so happy for them. Please enjoy and truly appreciate what you have instead of thinking what you don’t have.  Health, Family & Friends is what everyone can wish for.

Sisters and Brothers, if I had one wish and one wish only, I would wish that there would be no greed in this world.  Think about it for a minute,  No greed = no war; No greed = food for everyone on earth; No greed = quality of life for everyone in the world; No greed = lots of everything to go around for everyone.   If you think about it, “greed” is the root of all the wrong things

So, I wish you a Happy and Joyous Christmas!  Please don’t DRINK and DRIVE, it’s not COOL!!!  Just think how you would regret it if you would hurt or kill someone because you took that one chance.  BY THEN IT’S TOO LATE !

Raz DelMastro
Joint Health & Safety Co-Chair - Smelter - Xstrata Nickel

I would like to start off by wishing everyone all the best this
holiday season.

The year of 2012 is coming to an end and the beginning of a new year will soon be upon us. The New Year will be highlighted with the negotiation of a new collective agreement. During this time until a collective agreement is reached, we must stay focused and remain in solidarity. Yes, the three year contract is coming to an end but I do hope that despite any obscurity, you are all able to have fun along the way.

In the coming months, as we approach the era into a new chapter, Health and Safety will continue to remain my valued concern. We must continue to strive for developments towards Health and Safety from potential exposure from dust, mist and SO2.

I would like to thank you Sisters and Brothers for your continued support and efforts which at times may seem to have fallen short but some progress has been achieved.

Time flies when you’re having fun…and time’s fun when you’re having flies!”

Seasons greetings from your bargaining committee.  We would like to congratulate Ephraim Skinner on his recent victory for the position of Chief Steward at Fraser Mine.

At this time, we are well into preparing the proposals for the upcoming negotiations with the company which will begin on January 13th, 2013.  Our goal will be to reach a new collective agreement that is fair.  So, we are asking you to support your bargaining committee in reaching its goal.

Your interim Chief Stewards and the Stewards continue to work diligently on a day to day basis and they are available to address your concerns to.  Feel free to contact them if you have and issues.  Your interim Chief Stewards are Barry Carswell – Nickel Rim South; Pete Lauzon – Fraser Mine; Marcel Charron – Strathcona Mill; Bob Dellaire – Smelter

During this time of negotiations and the approaching festive season, it is very east to get side-tracked.  Remember to follow procedures and work safely.

The Bargaining Committee would like to wish all their brothers and sisters all the best over the Christmas holidays and all the best in 2013.

Interim Chief Stewards - Xstrata Nickel
Marcel Charron – Strathcona Mill; Pete Lauzon – Fraser Mine; Barry Carswell – Nickel Rim; Bob Dellaire - Smelter

The Bargaining Committee has been working hard on preparing the proposal package which was exchanged with the Company on December 14th, 2012.

We are hoping for a good outcome at bargaining and that an agreement will be signed February 1st, 2013.

We would all like to take this time to wish each and every one of you a safe and Merry Christmas…and all the best in the New Year.

Dwight Harper
Chief Steward - Smelter - Xstrata Nickel

Tis the season to be jolly, or so the story goes.  Many have calendars filled with dinners and gatherings. There is the decorating, shopping, gift wrapping, baking, the list is endless……but, for some, there is little to be jolly about.

A free Christmas dinner to someone who is homeless or a grocery card to a struggling family is like winning the lottery.  Never lose sight of how important it is to share your Christmas.  Instead of buying your child that third or fourth gift, donate it to a child who otherwise won’t get one.

Christmas isn’t a time to out-do each other, but rather the time to do for each, whether it be family, friends or strangers.

The best of the holiday season to you and yours.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

As another year comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on this years events.

It has been an exciting year with many changes in our workplaces and our Union.  Our new Union!  Our new CEP/CAW merger is starting to take shape providing our members with a stronger, united voice.  The next year holds many new opportunities and challenges for us as workers and I know we will all be refreshed after the Christmas season and ready to tackle the year ahead.

Have a safe and Merry Christmas, and a prosperous New Year.
