Letter from UFCW Local 175 and 633 - Deregulation of Store Hours
Published: 2014-10-31

President, Anne Marie MacInnis would like to share a letter received by UFCW Local 175 and 633 concerning the deregulation of store hours.

Sisters and Brothers,

UFCW Local 175 and 633 needs some help from some good friends.

We currently are trying to save some good bylaws that are in place and that are respectful of retail workers and time off with their families. The bylaws prevents retail stores from opening on Civic Holiday, Boxing Day and on a 24 hour basis.

We recently went through a referendum during the municipal elections dealing with the questions of deregulating store hours. In order for the referendum to succeed it needed over 50% of the electorate to vote on the question.

Well, 50% did not make it out to vote and the Referendum FAILED and as such our members continue to enjoy the much needed time away from work.

Unfortunately, the Mayor elect has indicated publicly he will now do what the Referendum failed to do, and he will put a motion before Council to deregulate the Store Hours.

Sudbury Star is conducting a Poll at http://www.thesudburystar.com/polls/221135 asking whether this acceptable of the Mayor or not.

Let's even out the odds!!!!

With Solidarity and Thanks,

UFCW Local 175 and 633.
