Newsletter - April 2010

Posted: April 6, 2010

Dear Members:

Since our last meeting, we had our quarterly meeting on March 19th. It was a good meeting. We discussed how to make our Union stronger.

The plan for our Union Hall has been crafted. They are still waiting for permits. It will take about three months to build.

Our Compensation, Health & Welfare Officer, Wayne Nitchie, is retiring June 1st, 2010. As a result of the recent election, Denis Chartrand was elected to replace him.

The Steelworkers held a rally on March 22nd on Brady Street, ending at the Sudbury Arena. Union leaders from other countries and Union members from other cities came on buses to show their support. The Steelworkers’ union and their members had a mock funeral procession for their strike at Vale Inco.

There will be a BBQ and car wash at the new Steelworkers building on Brady Street in Sudbury, and will be selling tickets for people who were affected by the fire in Copper Cliff.

I am on sick leave right now, but if you have any problems, you can always call me at 983-2394 or talk to your Steward, Michelle Labbe.

Xstrata Nickel: The Smelter will be on a production shutdown and Strathcona Mill will be on a vacation shutdown from June 8th to June 22nd.

As a reminder, the run-off election for Recording Secretary is taking place at the Union Offices from April 5th to April 8th, 2010. Please exercise your right to vote.

In Solidarity,

Huguette Gagne, Unit Chair
