Newsletter - June 2009

Posted: June 18, 2009

Greetings Brothers and Sisters of First Nickel Inc:

I had wanted to send out a note to inform you that the Company had taken Union Dues one time too many off our last pay check and to inform all of the upcoming election and what work-related news I had to date. This letter unfortunately did not get out with the checks that were sent.

Here are the 2009 election results for Local 598 Executive positions vote:

  • President-Richard Paquin
  • Vice President –Anne Marie Macinnis
  • Sergeant at Arms- Nicole Brown
  • Guide- “Felix” Denis Chartrand

By acclamation

  • Financial Secretary-Carole Baxter
  • Recording Secretary- Wayne Nitchie
  • Trustees- Michelle Chartrand, Ronda Gilchrist-Geeza and Scott Rogers.
  • Wayne Nitchie also won his existing position as Health and Welfare Officer again in the election.
  • I’m still Member-At-Large for our Unit and several others.

The second thing that I’d like to say is that many members have contacted me with information that they have heard of contractors coming on site to the mine and doing all sorts of work and or going to do work such as extend the ramp down before we go back to work.   I have not been able to find any evidence of this to date.

The Company can’t hire contractors to come in and do any work that we would normally do while any of us are on layoff.  If any one gets any information of any sort, do not hesitate to contact me ASAP with what you have. If you have a computer, drop me an e-mail at texas@cyberbeach.net  or phone me at 869-3272 with what you have. Try to get as many names and dates and all the info that you can and the Union will follow up on this information.

To date 16 CAW members have quit their jobs at FNI and taken their termination pay.  Mine Mill’s web site for information as well is www.minemill598.com

I’ve not heard any tentative start back date yet from the Company but as soon as I do I will try and inform all. I asked our V.P. at First Nickel for an outlook on what was happening to include with this letter, and this is what Gerry had sent us:
