Dear Brothers and Sisters of Lafarge:

Just a little note to let you know what has taken place the last month, and what to expect in the month of May.

First, I would like to welcome everybody back and hope that he or she and their families had a good winter.

For the new employees that were hired, I would like to say welcome to Lafarge and Mine Mill Local 598/CAW. Please keep track of your days worked, as it is now 90 working days instead of 90 calendar days for your probationary period.

Everybody should have received their signing bonus by now. If you haven't, please let me know. For those employees who were eligible for that pay for Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year's Day, if you did not receive it yet, it will be on your next pay. So once again, I say if you do not receive it, let me know.

Everyone should be paying 70 cents an hour towards their pension now. For those employees who worked from February 1st to March 13th, I am still working on getting our retro put into our Pension Plan, so expect a little more deductions in your Pension Plan on one of your pay stubs.

For those employees who have 15 years of seniority, you should be getting 8% vacation pay now. Retro has been paid. If you are not receiving it, let me know.

Now, for the big question that I am asked every day is when we are going to get our Drug Card. Good question. I have talked to Mark and John on this and they are putting the pressure on Great West Life to get them out to the employees. The last I was told it will be in the next four weeks.

The Company has assured me that Great West Life will be reimbursing any employee that has paid their $100.00 ($25.00 deductable for medical expenses and their $25.00 deductable for their dental expenses). So, once again I ask, once you receive your Drug Card, let me know if you get your $75.00 deductable for medical and your $25.00 deductable for dental back from Great West Life.

Now, for the upcoming month of May, anybody with two eyes can see that our sales are down and our Sales Department says it's because of the weather, that no one is doing any construction yet. The price of fuel and the rise of the Canadian dollar have hurt our sales at Meldrum Bay, big time. I am told that our May sales is only around the 400,000 ton mark, which means there is a good chance that hours will be reduced for the month of May. So don't jump all over Mark and the Company and the Union as its well above their control.

The Company hopes that things will pick up in the future months, but we all know it's a day-to-day thing.
