Newsletter - September 2017
Things seem to be going fairly well as a whole, except for a few issues concerning lower seniority employees receiving operator pay, we are working on this issue to make sure we get to a point where this never happens again going forward.

The bargaining committee has gone through the new contract and will be sending it to the Company to review. We will get copies to everyone as soon as possible. I'm sure by now all of you have heard about the possibility of a 12 hour shift schedule of some sort or another. There has been talk of it, but nothing has been decided on it and what's best for our members.

It has been a pretty busy month at First Nickel and with the support of Anne Marie MacInnis and Tom McIntyre, we have dealt with many issues. I am proud to say that with support of the workers, we have settled the 9 hour shift issue and the 1 hour overtime is to be paid out retroactively to its beginning.

As you all may have noticed we are getting a lot more employee/brothers coming in. I’m glad to see and hear that everyone is welcoming these new employee's in to our work force. Great job every one. I estimate that we are getting close to 90 employees on the work floor.

I'm sure most of you have heard or seen that we had an M.O.L (Ministry Of Labour) come in at the end of January. There was a situation where an employee was worried that he might be doing a job that according to the labour laws, he could be fined up to $10,000.

Now that I have your attention, your health care is being put up for privatization to the highest bidder. There are people out there who are trying to privatize your health care (OHIP). Things such as surgeries, examinations, etc., are being pushed to be privatized.

Your Union has had a meeting with the company and several of the outstanding grievances have been cleared out. In particular, your Union has settled the outstanding grievance for one of our brothers and this meeting has or at least should have cleared up the way for your union and the company to start your negotiations for your new collective agreement.

If you haven't been following your union on the live web-cast that was happening over the weekend, we are now part of a greater and bigger union. The delegates voted 96% in favour of our new name which is now Unifor. Our union membership is now 300,000+ members strong – Canada wide. We are now the largest union in Canada.

There are several grievances in the system right now. The newest ones are for a member being suspended for insubordination towards a lead-hand. It is unfortunate that I cannot get into this in more detail or as much as I would like too, but I'm sure you all pretty much know what it is all about.

There have been a few unfortunate events that has happened recently. Two of our brothers at Mansour have been terminated. The union is working hard on trying to help these individuals.
2011 Negotiations for Mansour Mining Supply
Recent talks between the Sudbury Mine Mill and Smelter Workers Union Local 598/CAW and Mansour Mining have resulted in a tentative collective agreement, which the bargaining committee is recommending acceptance.
